Cowrie shell divination is one of Africa's most ancient oracular arts. Discover how these sacred shells reveal hidden truths, guide decisions, and connect you to ancestral wisdom.
For thousands of years, across West Africa, East Africa, and wherever African spiritual traditions have been carried by diaspora communities, cowrie shells have served as one of the most sacred and reliable tools of spiritual divination. Small, smooth, and shaped like an eye that sees both worlds, the cowrie is far more than a decorative object — it is an oracle, a medium, and a bridge between the visible and invisible realms.
Prof Mama Jafali is an accomplished practitioner of cowrie shell divination, trained in the traditional methods that have been passed down through generations. Her readings have helped clients gain clarity on relationships, career decisions, health concerns, spiritual challenges, and life direction with a precision that continues to astonish those who experience it.
The History of Cowrie Shell Divination
Cowrie shells (Cypraea moneta) were among the earliest forms of currency in Africa, Asia, and the Pacific, valued for their beauty and rarity. But their spiritual significance predates their economic use. In Yoruba tradition (Nigeria and Benin), the Ifa oracle includes a form of divination using sixteen cowries called Merindilogun. In East African coastal communities, cowries have been used in healing ceremonies and rites of passage. In the African diaspora — Brazil, Cuba, Haiti — cowrie divination travelled across the ocean and continues to be practised today.
How Cowrie Shell Reading Works
A cowrie shell has two sides: the rounded, smooth side (representing the closed mouth, or "no") and the flat, toothed side (representing the open mouth, or "yes"). In divination, a specific number of shells — traditionally four, eight, sixteen, or twenty-one, depending on the tradition — are cast onto a reading surface, which is often a woven mat or a piece of cloth. The pattern formed by the shells — how many land open-side up, how many are closed, their position relative to each other — creates a message that the trained diviner reads.
What Cowries Can Reveal
Unlike tarot cards or rune stones, cowrie divination does not deal in generalised symbolic meanings. It speaks directly to the specific situation of the person being read, addressing the root causes of their challenges, the spiritual forces at work in their life, and the most aligned path forward. A cowrie reading can reveal ancestral blockages, identify enemies or negative spiritual influences, clarify confusing relationship situations, provide guidance on major decisions, and identify the most effective spiritual remedies for presenting problems.
Preparing for a Cowrie Reading
When you seek a cowrie shell reading, come with a clear and sincere desire for truth. The shells respond to genuine need and authentic inquiry. Bring your most pressing question, but also remain open to receiving information you were not expecting — the ancestors speak what needs to be heard, not always what the questioner expects. Avoid approaching a reading in a state of extreme agitation if possible; a brief period of quiet reflection beforehand creates a cleaner channel for the information to come through.
The Spiritual Significance of the Cowrie
Beyond its divinatory function, the cowrie shell holds deep spiritual symbolism in African tradition. Its resemblance to a feminine form associates it with the goddess, with fertility, and with the creative power of life. It is also associated with the ocean — the vast, deep source from which life emerged and to which all things return. Wearing cowrie shells is a form of spiritual adornment that connects the wearer to these ancient powers and to the protection of the divine feminine.
If you are seeking clarity in your life, navigating a difficult decision, or feeling that unseen forces are at work in your circumstances, a cowrie shell reading with Prof Mama Jafali may be the most direct path to the answers you are looking for.
